  21.     This is part 3 of the FAQ for the alt.binaries.pictures* hierarchy.  
  22.     This part of the alt.binaries.pictures FAQ contains information specific
  23.     to particular systems and on available utilities.

  39.     to read anything that has changed since the last distribution.  These

  41.     the alt.binaries.pictures FAQ".  Note that this is a "live" document, and 
  42.     is always getting important information added or updated.

  45. Before you miss an important detail contained in this file, let me
  46. "pre-repeat" that *many* programs mentioned in this document are available 
  47. for anonymous ftp at bongo.cc.utexas.edu (128.83.186.13), in the gifstuff 
  48. directory.  Also: there are NO GIF files of any kind at this site!  Save
  49. your time and don't bother looking for them!
  50. Additionally, the file "ftpsites" on bongo in the gifstuff directory gives
  51. many examples of places to find these utilities.

  69. I. UTILITY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
  70. Ever since the new format was adopted, lots of people want to see their 
  71. favorite utility listed here!  That's great - the whole idea behind this 
  72. FAQ is sharing the net wisdom (most of whats in this FAQ represents the 
  73. combined knowledge of the pictures and graphics community's readership).
  74. BUT... in order to include information on a particular utility, it has to
  75. meet the following criterion:
  76.     1) It has to fit into one of the classifications that make sense for
  77.        pictures (viewers, converters, decoders, posters/unposters, etc).
  78.     2) It's either Public Domain, FreeWare, or ShareWare software.  It
  79.        doesn't make a lot of sense for this FAQ to become one big 
  80.        advertisement!
  81.     3) It has to be readily available.  It doesn't do me (or anyone else,
  82.        for that matter) much good to know "I don't know where I got it,
  83.        but the MajorHonkinTool utility solves all my problems...".
  84. So, to submit a utility, I need to know (in as much detail as you can
  85. possibly give):
  86.     A) What's the utility's name,
  87.     B) What it does,
  88.     C) What platforms it runs on (probably one or more of the ones listed
  89.        in this FAQ are most appropriate =:^) ),
  90.     D) Where to get it.  Anonymous FTP or mail server archive is the best, 
  91.      but if it's been posted to a newsgroup, that would be OK, too.  If
  92.      you want to set yourself up as an e-mail distribution for a utility,
  93.      that's OK too - but be prepared for a deluge of requests!  I WILL
  94.      NOT accept someone else's address as an e-mail distribution unless
  95.      they specifically send their approval (for obvious reasons).  Don't
  96.      just send me something expecting that I'll put it on bongo, either
  97.      - bongo has very limited file resources (and is pretty much at its 
  98.      quota already)!
  99. Without the full information above, I can't list the utility in this FAQ in 
  100. good conscience, since it won't be very useful...

  105. II. COMMON FTP SITES

  107. There are a few sites out there that are mentioned time and time again in 
  108. this document.  In order to save a little space (and make things easier to 
  109. maintain), the following convention has been devised.  The shorthand for
  110. a site or sites is listed first, the site address(es) is noted, and any
  111. special information relative to the sites is also given.  Hope this isn't
  112. too confusing!

  146. III. PORTABLE UTILITIES
  147.  
  148. "GENERAL UTILITY" TOOLS:
  149. GIFtest.c               Tests integrity of GIF files.
  150.     Available via anonymous FTP from BONGO:gifutils/giftest.c, or from
  151.     BRYANW:misc/giftest_source.zip.
  152.  
  153. DECODERS/ENCODERS:
  154. unc            "Smart decoder" by Mark Maimone (mwm@cs.cmu.edu) - uses
  155.             article headers to determine the posting order and puts
  156.             parts in appropriately named files to aid processing
  157.             through uudecode.  Newest version handles missing or 
  158.             "noisy" info in Subject: lines more gracefully, and also
  159.             provides better MS-DOS support.  Portable only across
  160.             UNIX and MS-DOS systems (so far).  Mark is interested
  161.             in any port feedback you can give him - especially VMS.
  162.             He's even willing to help with the porting effort!
  163.             Latest version is 2.3.
  164.     Available via anonymous FTP on vacation.venari.cs.cmu.edu 
  165.     (128.2.209.207) in directory /usr0/anon, file unc-*.Z (or exploded 
  166.     files in the unc-* directory - also posted to alt.sources).

  168. COMPRESSION/DECOMPRESSION TOOLS:
  169. cjpeg/djpeg         Free, portable C code for JPEG compression from the 
  170.             Independent JPEG Group, lead by Tom Lane 
  171.             (tgl+@cs.cmu.edu).  This software has been tested on 
  172.             numerous Unix machines, PCs, Macs, and Amigas; it is
  173.             believed that it can be ported to almost any machine 
  174.             that has a (reasonable) C compiler.
  175.     Available via anonymous FTP from several places.  The "official" 
  176.     archive site for this source code is ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9 or 
  177.     192.48.96.9).  Look under directory /graphics/jpeg; the file to 
  178.     retrieve is jpegsrc.v?.tar.Z.  You can retrieve this file by FTP or 
  179.     UUCP.  Folks in Europe may find it easier to FTP from 
  180.     NIC:/pub/graphics/programs/jpeg/jpegsrc.v?.tar.Z.  The source code is 
  181.     also available on CompuServe, in the GRAPHSUPPORT forum (GO PICS), 
  182.     library 10, as jpsrc*.zip.
  183.     If you are not reasonably handy at configuring and installing portable 
  184.     C programs, you may have some difficulty installing the free source 
  185.     code.  There is currently an FTP archive of pre-built executable 
  186.     versions of the free JPEG code for various machines, accessible at 
  187.     ftp.cis.ksu.edu (129.130.10.80); look under /pub/JPEG to see what is 
  188.     currently available.  The administrators ask that FTP traffic to this 
  189.     system be limited to non-prime hours.
  190.  
  191. CONVERSION TOOLS:
  192. PBMPlus tool kit     Maintained by Jef Poskanzer (jef@well.sf.ca.us).  Very
  193.             nearly a de-facto standard for converting between many
  194.             different formats.  Includes "utility" tools to scale,
  195.             quantize, crop, flip, rotate, and many other graphics
  196.             operations.
  197.     Available via anonymous FTP from EXPORT:pbmplus*.tar.Z and from 
  198.       ftp.ee.lbl.gov (128.3.112.20) as /pbmplus*.tar.Z.  Visit the newsgroup 
  199.     alt.graphics.pixutils for more details, discussion of usage, etc.
  200. UtahRaster Tools    Converts between many file formats, somewhat similar
  201.             to the PBMPlus tool kit.
  202.     Available via anonymous FTP from

  204. GIFtoPS            GIF to postscript converter.

  208. IV. MS-DOS PROCEDURES/UTILITIES
  209.  
  210. There is an archive of MS-DOS OS/2 tools available either via anonymous FTP 
  211. (on hobbes.nmsu.edu - 128.123.35.151) or via e-mail, by sending a one-line 
  212. mail command message.  Many of the utilities listed in this section can be 
  213. obtained here;  these will be identified by the notation
  214. "HOBBES:<archive-file>(<mail name>)".
  215. This would mean that you could get that utility in the pathname specified as
  216. /pub/os2/general/graphics/<archive-file>, or via e-mail by sending a message
  217. containing "GET <mail name> OS2" to LISTSERV@BLEKUL11.BITNET.
  218. I might also suggest to OS/2 users that you get a copy of the index (one-line 
  219. e-mail message is "INDEX") and help (one-line e-mail message is "HELP") for 
  220. this site - there's over 150M of OS/2 programs, and the list is growing...

  222. SYSTEM-SPECIFIC PROCEDURES:
  223.     * To concatenate multi-part picture files together, execute:
  224.   copy part1 + part2 + part3 + ... + partN file
  225.  
  226. DECODERS/ENCODERS:
  227. UUDECODE/UUENCODE    Decoder/encoder for uuencoded files.

  229.     /pub/pc/win31/util.  A BASIC program for UUDECODE is also available
  230.     from WUARCHIVE:/mirrors/msdos/starter/uudecode.bas.
  231. UUDO            Decoder for multi-part uuencoded files (each part
  232.             must be in its own file with a discernible Subject:
  233.             line).  Written by Ryan Kim (rkim@eecg.toronto.edu).

  304. IMDISP            Image processing and display.  It runs on just about 
  305.             any DOS PC, utilizes graphics cards from EGA to SVGA, 
  306.             does most basic image processing functions (histogram,
  307.             contrast stretch, zoom, shrink, smooth, edge enhance, 
  308.             adjust color palette, etc.).  It can read 1, 2, 4, 8,
  309.             16, or 32 bit integer binary images, as well as 
  310.             PDS/VICAR, FITS, and GIF.  Public domain.

  326. ColorView        JPEG, GIF, Windows BMP viewer/converter/editor, also
  327.             includes mirror/rotation/scaling and slideshow viewing.
  328.             Works under DOS 2.x, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, requires 640 K or 
  329.             more of physical memory, hard disk and Microsoft
  330.             compatible mouse recommended, works on 286 or better.

  357. ImgFun            GIF, PCX, BMP, JPEG viewer by Chin-Chi Hsu 
  358.             (chinhsu@scf.usc.edu).  Handles larger image sizes, but
  359.             always converts JPEG into 256 colors on input.  Scroll,
  360.             zoom up to 16X, reverse, mirror, brightness, contrast,
  361.             color, smooth, sharpen, resize, and cut adjustments.  
  362.             Requires a 286 with 512K or above, VGA or SVGA, supports
  363.             most popular SVGA cards.  Includes Windows PIF file.

  365. SVGA            Multiple format (GIF, PCX, BMP, TGA, etc. - no JPEG)
